Two of our Academy archers, Ryan Pinder and Harrison Waterworth were invited to attend the ArcheryGB selection shoot to decide the team for the European Youth Championships and Ryan has very kindly written the following report about the weekend.
Last weekend I was lucky enough to be one of the junior archers who was invited to compete at the Youth GB selection shoot to decide the team for the European Youth Champs later in the year. I have only just become old enough to be in the cadet age group and so I knew I would be competing against much older, stronger and more experienced archers then me and so I didn’t expect to be very competitive but wanted to go for the experience and to see how it all worked and what it would be like.
The tournament was held at Lilleshal in the pod. It was a great field of competitors with age ranging from 13 to 21. There was only one other welsh competitor in the field and that was Harrison Waterworth who was shooting in the junior age group. We both shot really well on the Saturday and came in the top 8 competitors even though the weather was windy, cold and clouded over and both of us qualified to compete in the head to head’s on the Sunday.
On the Sunday it was slightly warmer but the wind was still there and was stronger. We both shot well in the morning but Harrison’s group was really strong and included several of the talent confirmation and podium potential juniors and so unfortunately he didn’t make the cut for the afternoon despite winning some of his matches and taking some of them to single arrow shoot-offs …. He did really well. I was luckier and just made it through to the next round but the wind picked up in the afternoon and it was getting more and more difficult. I didn’t make the top 4 and so wasn’t selected for the team but I had a great weekend and really enjoyed the whole experience ….. plus I now know what I have to do to beat the competition . We both shot amazing over the weekend and if you would like to look at the results here is the link: http://www.cdexter.co.uk/agb/
